The most excellent Driftglass thoroughly deconstructs Andy Sullivan's latest lament that we're all in it together.
It really is too bad so many of our fellow citizens (those "masters of the universe"), who have made so much from the rest of us ("rubes"), feel that we ALL should pay for the wages of their sin and excess. It is this very lack of responsibility among our so-called elites that has led our Republic to the economic brink. It is this continuing lack of shame, guilt, fair-play and justice that allows these elites to demand that the rest of us descend deep into the bowels of their Titanic to bail them out and prolong their happy existance in the first-class lounge. Sadly, the ad-driven and marketed illusion (constantly reinforced by our horribly compromised mainstream media) that by trusting these people we will "ALL BE RICH!!" continues to send all to many of our friends, neighbors and relatives down into the bilges to drown first in the losing battle to keep the ship afloat.
Somehow, unlike the Billy Joel's soldier brothers, our nation's elites simply do not think we'll all go down together. They have their lifeboats and wealth to carry them to the next Promised Land while nearly everyone else is still bailing water. Well, you can put me down for drifty's proposed solution - pike poles for The Street. And, if we can't have the pike poles, then let's have a radical adjustment of tax rates for those much more fortunate citizens just might do.
Too bad a more progressive tax policy - one that requires those who have made (and make) the most from our government - will probably not happen.
Maybe then the pike poles will get broken out.

Yes, SP,
Our "Masters of the Financial Universe" are not going down at all (and certainly will end up nowhere near us).
As you so ably commented, that first $750 billion payoff went to ensure that these masters will dance off into the ether with their paychecks intact, and they'll receive their due in bonuses for the fraud, theft and mayhem that they were put in place to wreak.
You've almost got to applaud the acting job they've done so far - just to open-mouthedly watch Ali Greedspan, Hankie P. and Fast Benny B. looking confused and worried as they mugged their way through the explanations of how they weren't sure just what went wrong and why the money they were throwing at their compatriots wasn't solving the problem was a first-rate, opening night, Oscar-worthy performance, and a huge hit with the adoring masses (and not hitting the streets immediately in the wake of these announcements only proves how attractive the scent of money(men) is to the easily flummoxed).
We just have to stay tuned for the takeover of the 'splaining by the new bosses.
Thanks again for the essay. Dg lives!

Suzan,
Your absolutely right about keeping tuned in to the "new bosses." If we're lucky, the (royal) "we" will be able to make them see the patriotism in raising taxes on those so fortunate to gain the taxpayers (borrowed) coin to "bail them out" of the mess they created.
At least I hope we're lucky, 'cause, the way the "Joe the X" of the country see it, the pike poles will be the least of the moneyman's worries. Drawing and quartering might be more the style!
Thanks for commenting and stopping by!!!!
